SOSD, an animal welfare group for dogs in Singapore, has embarked on a collaborative initiative with local filmmakers to produce HOMEBOUND, an anthology of five compelling short films that celebrate stories of resilience, hope, and healing surrounding rescue dogs in Singapore.
About life, love and loss this initiative aims to spotlight these often-overlooked and feared canine companions whilst showcasing remarkable journeys of overcoming adversity and new beginnings. With stories inspired by true events from SOSD, each filmmaker brings a unique perspective and storytelling approach to capture the heartfelt narratives of the dogs.
Executively produced by veteran Singaporean film producer Daniel Yun (I Not Stupid), this initiative also marks MediaCorp actors Rui En (Happy Family) and Lawrence Wong (Story of Yanxi Palace) directorial debuts with their respective SOSD short films. The remaining films are directed by Tejas Ewing (Gaia), Jason Lee (The Buddy), and co-directors Jeremy Kieran Ng (Summerdaze) and Zhang Minhua (Summerdaze).
The films feature SOSD’s shelter dogs, with Brandon as Esky, Flubby as Echo, Lengzai as Bacon, Sniper as Frida, and Stevie as Friday No. 2. Starring alongside the Singapore Specials are actors Andie Chen (The Little Nyonya), Lim Meijiao (Unriddle), Oon Shu An (The Kitchen Musical), Remesh Panicker (Cyber Wars), Shabir Sulthan (This Land Is Mine), Toh Han Wei (Maybe, Marriage), Ya Hui (Seven Days) as well as award-winning actress Yeo Yann Yann (Ilo Ilo).
“The Homebound project highlights the plight of stray animals and unwanted pets in Singapore, and the work volunteers do to help them. With the films, we endeavour to showcase the loving nature of stray animals, and cultivate a compassionate and caring society. Each short film describes a situation, through which we can get a glimpse into the larger animal welfare landscape in Singapore. Through the films, we hope to inspire more to step up and volunteer their time and efforts towards helping the homeless animals. ” said Dr Siew Tuck Wah, Founder of SOSD, whose dog Bacon inspired one of the short films.
“I attended the annual SOSD fundraising charity gala last year and was inspired by the stories from the founders and volunteers of how they cared for our street dogs. I realised our Singapore Specials, our street dogs, are not top-of-mind, and may be misunderstood. Gathering filmmakers to shine a light on their stories is something I can do and with the right directors, do well,” said Executive Producer, Daniel Yun.
HOMEBOUND will premiere at a charity screening on 30 October at Conrad Centennial Singapore at 7pm. Tickets are available here.
