The new concept of Ponggol Nasi Lemak Restaurant focuses on speed and efficiency – catering to the busy and lunch crowd while the main stalls still operate in the night. Ponggol Nasi Lemak at Jalan Besar operates as a fast-food chain style; you get Set Meals, with customizations that include some of the all-time favourites (think crispy luncheon meat, more fried chicken wings) as well as some of the exclusive in-house only items. Prices are the same, but you get more choices and more importantly; air-conditioning to enjoy your Nasi Lemak! Some of the exclusive new items that Ponggol Nasi Lemak offers are below:
The Grilled Squid is succulent on its own and even better with the homemade chili. It is flown from Japan to ensure the consistency in size and grilling time, to reduce any deviations in texture!
Fried Chicken Skin is a must-try at Ponggol Nasi Lemak. Dubbed as the best new creation and for the right reasons, the crispy, fried chicken skin is tossed in curry leaves and kicap manis. If it makes you feel better, rest assured that the skin has the fats painstakingly taken out before frying. Highly addictive and in limited quantity each day!
Crispy Fried Battered Fish and Prawn are also available as add-ons to your Nasi Lemak. The batter is crispy on the outside, and soft within, keeping the freshness of the fish. The prawn comes in its entirety – prawn head is included in the batter so as to retain the sweetness of the roe.
The new dessert through several R&D is the Homemade Sorbets and ice-creams, which comes in 6 flavours. These little icy treats is priced at S$2.50 a cup. Some of my personal favourites from the sorbet would be the Lemongrass Lime and Pink Guava which are both refreshing, and the Milo which is authentic and not too sweet.
Ponggol Nasi Lemak Restaurant brings our local fare with a modernizing twist. Unlike the other outlets at Tanjong Katong and Kovan, Jalan Besar only opens in the day. We do hope this franchise and concept expands, to bring our favourite Nasi Lemak and the speed and efficiency close to the customers.
