Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a triumph

Based on the Oscar-winning movie, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert the Musical is the heart-warming, uplifting adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus searching for love and friendship and end up finding more than they could have ever dreamed of.

Apart from some really powerful vocals from the casts, the musical impresses us with many of its aesthetics and direction. The props and costumes are so cheerily vibrant and really give a light-hearted mood to the musical, despite the mature thematic matter. One of the best prop goes to the Priscilla bus, which, together with the desert visual backdrop, complemented each other almost seamlessly. Do not worry if you are not familiar with the musical – most of the songs are almost instantly recognizable by their familiar tunes, and some of these songs receive new treatment in the rendition fitted for the mood on stage.

The musical is light-hearted, with a few jabs at the local culture, thanks to Jonathan Lim (opening the musical as Miss Understanding), the only Singaporean that was privileged to be part of the main casts. The story is meant to tug at some of your heart strings, but it releases them almost instantly with some “incidental” humor that is often subtle. It is emotional without bringing your spirits down; a good balance of emotions when it comes to the discovery of life lessons among the three friends. Go for the musical with an open mind and you will leave with an enriched experience and also some insights that were highlighted in the struggles and coming-to-terms with homosexuality. Priscilla Queen of the Desert will leave you smiling, tapping to the grooves and vibrancy to life.

Priscilla offers so many unforgettable moments. Few of my favourite numbers include Go West, a hearty and spirited dance routine, True Colors, a powerful rendition that fits beautifully to the musical’s theme and the bubbly Girls Just Want To Have Fun.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert is rated 16 (Mature Advisory) and tickets are on sale. The show will be on 24, 25 and last show on 26 October 2014. Grab more friends along for a light-hearted musical and you get bundle tickets discounts as well. We hope you have a great time at Priscilla, Queen of the Desert the Musical like we did, feet tapping in joyous motion to the vibrant musical!
