Lights Out with NOX-Dine in the Dark

NOX-Dine in the Dark is a restaurant with a totally new concept and as its name explains, it has something to do with eating in the dark.

The interior settings of the restaurant give off this very classy and elegant look. There is an open kitchen and bar concept. You can chill out here at this level and have your cocktails.

If you take the time to look around, you will notice that on the walls are printed what looks like Braille. Why use Braille as part of their design? You will find out later on.

This is the menu and having designed it in such a way that the words are printed vertically adds to its elegance.

Also, some of their cocktails have the most interesting names. Ever heard of Don’t tell Eve or Jealousy Looms? These are but some of the signature cocktails which NOX – Dine in the Dark has to offer. I have never really drunk cocktails before, so just reading the names of the drinks themselves make it sound pretty intriguing.

These are the appetizers we were served, along with our cocktails, Bacciferous and Ignite my Passion. They were recommended as they looked really good on camera, so all you foodies out there know what cocktails to order if this is what you are looking for. We were also told that they were the only visible food we were having for the evening.

The whole concept is about eating in the dark and not being able to see what we eat. When we can’t see what we eat, our other senses are heightened and the experience we get from eating is different.

What kind of food to expect? Well, the food is of modern European cuisine and there is some fusion involved and ingredient replacement too, so they may not turn out to be the typical dish or ingredient you expect. That makes it fun in guessing.

It’s still eating but it’s eating with a challenge. If you think you know your food well or your taste buds are up to the challenge, then this dinning experience is something you won’t want to miss out on. My colleague and I enjoyed the experience of tasting our food and thinking aloud what ingredients were included.

The part you would like to know the most, how are you served? There are appetizers, main course and dessert. Each of them will come in 4 servings, you can imagine them to be a small square container and at your 12, 3,6 and 9 o’ clock. They form this plus sign. For me, I just use a spoon and basically dip it into the container and make sure I clean all the sides to ensure I finish my food.

Below are some possible pictures of the dishes that could be served. NOX – Dine in the Dark usually changes its menu every 4 to 6 weeks to keep their dishes mysterious and novel so that customers who enjoy the food may come back for more.

The whole dining in the dark experience reminds me of Orientation Games in University when we were blindfolded and led to play different games. Only this time, the game we are playing has to do with tasting food and it is so beautifully crafted into this dining experience at NOX – Dine in the Dark.

What makes it really meaningful dining at NOX – Dine in the Dark is that the visually impaired are serving us. They are our guides to the second level where we are served our food and they are able to do so much more than we give them credit for. Besides dining in this restaurant with a cool concept, we also get to interact with them and learn more about them. It’s been a really humbling experience dining at NOX – Dine in the Dark.

To celebrate our Nation’s 49th Birthday, NOX – Dine in the Dark has decided to launch a Special Menu concentrating on Singapore’s famous local flavours for only one week! Enjoy local delights with a European twist from the 4th – 10th of August and be amazed at how Executive Chef Desmond Lee uses various premium ingredients to take our local delights to the next level.
